Connecting young athletes across Africa and around the world through sport, friendship and cultural exchange.
Born from ONA's mission to strengthen the bridge between African athletes at home and across the diaspora, Pen Pals is growing the village even wider. Young athletes of all backgrounds are welcome.
Young athletes can live thousands of miles apart and still understand the excitement of game day, the disappointment of a tough loss, the discipline of practice, the pressure to improve and the size of a dream.
Pen Pals uses that shared language of sport as a starting point for something deeper: friendship, cultural curiosity, belonging and a chance to see the world through another young person's eyes.
For African and diaspora families, that may include a meaningful connection to heritage, language or home. For families of other backgrounds, it can be an opportunity to build an authentic friendship across cultures. Both belong in the same village.
The initiative intentionally creates connections with young athletes across African countries.
African and African-diaspora youth can deepen heritage, language, identity and homeland connections.
Young athletes of every heritage are welcome to participate with curiosity, respect and a genuine desire for friendship.

Who Can Participate
Your child does not have to be African to belong here — and this remains, unmistakably, an ONA initiative centered on building bridges with African youth athletes.
Thoughtful Matching
A parent or guardian registers the young athlete.
ONA reviews the profile and considers a thoughtful potential match.
ONA contacts the parents/guardians first.
Both families receive appropriate information and decide whether to proceed.
Parents agree on the communication method and remain involved in all exchanges.
We're more interested in making the right connection than the fastest connection.

No. Pen Pals is rooted in ONA's mission to connect African athletes at home and across the diaspora, but young athletes of all backgrounds are welcome to participate.
No. The initiative is open to youth athletes across sports.
The recommended participation range is ages 10–18.
ONA considers age, sport, interests, personality, language, cultural connection, family preferences and practical compatibility. Matches are made thoughtfully as the community grows.
Families may share country, language or heritage preferences. ONA will consider them, but cannot guarantee a particular match.
Yes. Cross-cultural friendship is an important part of the initiative, and families can tell ONA how open they are to different types of matches.
No. ONA connects parents/guardians first. Parents decide how their children communicate and remain involved in the exchanges.
Families can agree on a rhythm that works for both children. Consistency matters more than frequency.
No. Pen Pals is a friendship and cultural-connection initiative. Every young person participates as a peer.
Parents should contact ONA. A connection can be paused or ended, and ONA can consider a different match as the community grows.
